CALL FOR PAPERS: 12th AEMI conference “Migrants and refugees − then and now”

Association of European Migration Institutions (AEMI) together with its local partner organization "Latvians Abroad – museum and research centre” and the Advanced Social and Political Research Institute (ASPRI) of the University of Latvia, announces a call for papers for the annual AEMI conference titled “Migrants and refugees − then and now” , which will be held in Riga (Latvia) from September 25 to 27, 2014.

Migration researchers indicate that in today's Europe each and every country is affected by migration (Martiniello & Rath 2012). A growing number of people are on the move, and the causes and trajectories of migration are becoming more diverse as well. Not only international, but also internal European migration is one of the top questions on the political agenda. At present, in the context of international migration almost every country is at the same time a sending, a receiving and a transit country, almost every modern country can be thought of as a collection of diasporas (UNDP 2012). The number of refugees and asylum seekers is growing - by the end of 2010, there were 43.7 million forcibly displaced people worldwide, the highest number in 15 years. Of these, 15.4 million were refugees. At the same time, the escalation of armed conflicts at Europe's threshold over the course of past several years brings the topic of forced migration even closer to home.

The theme of the 2014 AEMI conference is Migrants and Refugees – Then and Now. Since AEMI members come from various fields and are interested in different aspects of migration, the papers could cover a wide range of both historical questions and contemporary issues, including, child migration, unemployment and youth migration, internal migration in Europe, refugees, return migrants and circular migrants, migration and social media.

In order to apply, please provide a paper abstract (in English) with no more than 300 words and a brief biographic summary of no more than 200 words. The selection of papers will be done based on their thematic significance and academic quality.

DEADLINE: The call for paper has been extended til June 8, 2014
